Arch or chuppah is partly a question of tradition and partly a question of structure. They are built differently, they take florals differently and they need different space on your ceremony plan. Here is the difference in practical terms, from a company that builds and installs both.

The structural difference

A chuppah is a four-post canopy. The covering overhead is the entire point: in a Jewish ceremony the couple stands beneath it, usually with the officiant and often both sets of parents, so it needs real clearance underneath and a footprint that fits five to seven people.

An arch is a two-post or curved frame that the couple stands in front of rather than inside. It has no canopy, it takes up less depth, and it exists mainly to frame the couple for the guests and the camera.

Choosing the size

Scale is driven by the guest count and by how wide the photograph is. A compact structure frames two people and reads intimate at an elopement or a garden ceremony of forty. A standard scale is the usual choice between forty and a hundred and twenty guests. Above that, or against an open coastline, a vineyard horizon or a tall ballroom wall, an oversized structure is what stops the couple looking small in the wide shots.

The mistake we see most often is a structure chosen at the size that looked right in a close-up on Pinterest, then set against an ocean. Match the structure to the background, not to the photo you saved.

Florals, fabric and who supplies what

We rent and install the structure. Your florist dresses it, and a chuppah canopy is usually the couple’s own tallit or a fabric supplied by the florist or the family. Get the hand-off agreed early: the florist needs to know when the structure will be standing, and we need to know how much weight is going on it and where.

Floral budget is where the two choices really separate. Four posts and a canopy edge take noticeably more product than one asymmetric cluster on an arch. If budget is tight and the ceremony is secular, an arch gets you most of the photograph for a fraction of the flowers.

Wind, ground and weighting

Every outdoor ceremony structure has to be weighted, and California coastal and desert venues get real evening wind. Sand, decomposed granite and uneven lawn each change how a structure is anchored, which is why we install our own rather than dropping them at the gate. Ask any supplier how they weight in wind before you book. A structure that moves during vows is the one failure nobody forgets.
